Black Pig Printmaking Courses in Frome

We have space for a maximum of nine people at any one time. Because the class sizes are small there is plenty of one-to-one tuition.

As well as regular classes we also offer refresher courses for teachers, art historians, curators and lecturers and one-to-one courses at £250 a day. These courses are planned according to the needs of the individual or group. For art historians we can not only show how various different prints are made, but we can actually make some of the materials as well. The individually planned courses have lunch provided if desired at an extra £10 per head; Spanish home cooking, vegetarians and vegans catered for.  If you are interested in these classes contact Chris Pig at

Unless otherwise stated, all courses are at the Black Pig Printmaking Studio, 13 Long Ground Frome BA11 1PJ. Payment is either by cash or cheque; at the moment we are still a primitive organism, digital payment solutions will be on their way soon. You pay on the day your course starts.

Due to an impending hip operation, the linocut course has been moved on a couple of week to the 22nd of June, it will run for five weeks instead of seven. Also, there is a one day linocut course running on the 27th of May from 10-4 costing £50.

Book Binding Courses

We have two day-time book binding courses this year with Kate Holland. May 3rd, 4th and 5th and October 4th, 5th and 6th 10-4 £150

1. Multi section case bindings - flat back & rounded and backed.

This 3 day workshop will take you through the different stages of making a multi-section handbound book with hard cover, including folding, making endpapers, stitching, trimming, rounding and backing, spine lining, covering and casing in.

You will learn about paper grain, bookbinding cloths, and different bookbinding tools. You will come away with at least two books, one flat back and one rounded and backed.

All materials will be provided and no previous bookbinding experience is required.

2. Coptic binding with slipcase

In this 3 day workshop you will learn how to make a Coptic bound book and a protective slipcase. The Coptic binding is a historical, non-adhesive structure, still popular today for its flexible and beautiful format. It has hard covers and exposed sewing on the spine and opens perfectly flat which makes it ideal to use as a notebook, sketchbook, photo album or to incorporate your own artwork or writing.

You will learn how to prepare the covers and sections and sew the book together. In the second half of the workshop, we will be making a bookcloth covered slipcase designed to fit the Coptic book. The slipcase is an open-edged box that leaves the spine visible while protecting the book.

Materials will be included in the cost of the course. This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience in bookbinding.

At last! A regular Thursday slot for lino cut. Suitable for all levels of ability, you will be tutored in how to prepare lino, transfer designs, design development, cutting lino and printing. Now, thanks to a generous grant from the Golsoncott Foundation, we have 26 brand new Pfeil gouges. This will make an enormous difference to teaching lino and to what students can achieve. This studio specialises in lino cut so it is laid out for professional production. Each student has plenty of one-to-one contact with the tutor so we can take their initial work in the direction the student wants to explore. We do not use water based inks on this course.

The dates are: June 22nd and 29th, July 6th, 13th and 20th. 1-3pm £100 Tutor Chris Pig
